Call Waiting celebrates the NEW Gallery.
When the New Gallery opened 15 years ago, the Auckland Art Gallery saw it as a new home for contemporary art in Auckland. And so it has proven to be with dozens of exhibitions large and small, from New Zealand and from around the world, from the gallery's own collection and from a myriad of individual and corporate lenders, from artists and from institutions, as well as surprising, enjoyable and memorable art events.
The New Gallery has relieved the pressure on exhibition spaces in the main Art Gallery and helped revitalise Auckland's arts precinct, attracting dealer galleries to the area and brightening the Auckland arts scene.
Curated by Alexa Johnston, Call Waiting celebrates the history of the New Gallery as we look forward to the main Gallery building reopening in mid-2011.

Art reveals the central place of food in all cultures. Different peoples develop their own relationships with food, from the careful preparation of traditional dishes to the communal consumption of celebratory feasts. Brueghel's A Village Fair and Lindauer's Time of Kai depict communities observing these time-honoured traditions. Renowned photographers Marti Friedlander, Gil Hanly and Glenn Jowitt document Polynesian food practices. Jae Hoon Lee looks at the global migration of food culture, composing his own Kiwi feast from random Korean meals recreated in plastic.

In Shifting Light offers visitors fresh ways to understand how artists have interpreted New Zealand landscapes – as sites of social and personal experiences. As such, the artists in this exhibition have chosen to rewrite, deconstruct or describe various landscapes and their/our place within it.
This collection-based exhibition, curated by Ron Brownson, brings together 40 works across a variety of medium including a poignant Ans Westra photograph taken at the Early Settlers Museum in Dunedin, the mysterious video and CAD topographies of Mladen Bizumic and paintings by Charles Goldie, Ralph Hotere, as well as Colin McCahon.
These works reflect landscapes as sites through which to define ourselves as a people and place – light and darkness conveys the spiritual and emotional responses to these sites.
In Shifting Light presents art works from the historic, modern and contemporary parts of the gallery’s New Zealand collection and explores how the notion of landscape has evolved.

Auckland Art Gallery exhibition Turuki Turuki! Paneke Paneke! When Maori Art Became Contemporary, on show from 24 May until 24 August, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first exhibition of contemporary Maori art in Auckland.
In 1958, mentor and educator, Matiu Te Hau curated an exhibition held at the University of Auckland that featured the paintings, sculpture and ceramics of five Northland teachers.
The artists were Arnold Manaaki Wilson, Ralph Hotere, Muru Walters, Katerina Mataira and the late Selwyn Wilson.
Now 50 years on, in recognition of the significance of the original exhibition, Auckland Art Gallery curator Ngahiraka Mason has mounted Turuki Turuki! Paneke Paneke!, an exhibition that showcases some art work from the original display and others from the late 1950s and early 1960s.

“The original exhibition captured the mood of the 1950s and drew attention away from Maori art displayed in museums and redirected that focus to another kind of Maori art,” says Mason.

The exhibition title, drawn from a chant that kept paddlers to a constant beat and sung as part of the formal mihi on the marae, acknowledges the mana of the artists for their role in advancing and moving Maori art into the imagination of both Maori and Pakeha.
